Packers agree to terms with Matthews
By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel
July 30, 2009 11:54 a.m.

Green Bay – The Green Bay Packers have agreed to terms with first-round draft choice Clay Matthews on a new contract.

According to an NFL source with knowledge of the deal, Matthews the base portion of the five-year deal is worth $10 million and there will be an opportunity for him to earn $13.275 million overall.

Matthews is the second of the Packers’ two first-round draft choices. The linebacker from USC was the 26th pick overall and is expected to compete for a starting job as a rush linebacker.

The Packers now have seven of their eight draft picks in the fold. The only player that remains unsigned is Boston College nose tackle B.J. Raji, the ninth pick overall.

....e s'inizia bene...

Top draft pick B.J. Raji won't be on the field when the Packers open training camp this afternoon -- and he could be absent for significantly longer.

A source this morning said there has been little dialogue between the Packers and Raji's agent, Dave Dunn of Athletes First, and most likely it's going to be "at least a couple days" before the No. 9 overall pick is in camp.

Dunn also represents the Packers' other first-round pick, Clay Matthews, who signed a five-year deal on Thursday, and the sides were focused on getting that deal done for most of the week.

Now, they're in a holding pattern on Raji because so many of the players drafted around him also remain unsigned, including tackle Andre Smith (No. 6, Cincinnati), tackle Eugene Monroe (No. 8, Jacksonville), receiver Michael Crabtree (No. 10, San Francisco), end Aaron Maybin (No. 11, Buffalo), running back Knowshon Moreno (No. 12, Denver) and cornerback Malcolm Jenkins (No. 14, New Orleans). Smith and Crabtree in particular could be headed for extended absences, since both are believed to be seeking larger-than-slotted deals, based on pre-draft projections.

There haven't even been many proposals exchanged between Dunn and Packers negotiator Russ Ball, the source said, making it highly unlikely a deal could get done before the Packers' second practice Sunday morning.

"It can get done quickly," the source said, "but I don't see that happening."

Last year's No. 9 overall pick, Cincinnati linebacker Keith Rivers, received a six-year deal worth $23 million that included $15.6 million guaranteed. It's not yet clear whether the Packers will push for a six-year pact with Raji or settle for five.

a.j. hawk idolo....

Ever wonder what a taxicab fare would be from Minneapolis to Green Bay?

Just ask A.J. Hawk.

On the eve of an organized team activity — a voluntary event — in June, Hawk found himself stranded in the Minneapolis airport, his flight canceled and all the rental car counters closed for the night. Surely, the Packers linebacker would just call coach Mike McCarthy, explain the situation and miss the next day’s workout. After all, it was optional.

Not Hawk. At 12:30 a.m., he and his wife went to the taxi stand.

“I didn’t think they’d go that far,” Hawk said. “But I asked them, ‘What’s the farthest they’ll go?’ They said, ‘As far as you want.’ And I said, ‘How about Green Bay?’ He realized I played (for the Packers), and said OK.”

The fare? A cool $1,000.

“We got home at 6 a.m., and I had to run in and get the checkbook,” Hawk said. “I cut it close because I had to be (at Lambeau Field) at 6:30 (a.m.), and it worked out.”

When asked why Hawk didn’t just skip the OTA, he said, “Every day is big for us with our installation of the new defense, so I didn’t want to miss anything. I was tired, but after practice was over, I felt fine.”

The NFL Players Association reimbursed Hawk for his cab fare because he had spent that weekend at an NFLPA-sponsored event in New York.

“But I would have done it anyway,” Hawk said. “It would have been a write-off at least, wouldn’t it?”
