Re: GB - OTA's...Let's begin...3-4...Work in progress...

Re: GB - OTA's...Let's begin...3-4...Work in progress...
I thought the Lombardi analogy failed on several levels, the first being that Lombardi won 5 titles and set a standard for excellence in coaching that is still aspired to 50 years later. Although Favre may believe that his impact on the Packers is equivalent to the one Lombardi had, it is not.
If you read the book on Lombardi, When Pride Still Mattered by David Mariniss, it makes it pretty clear that Lombardi's decision to retire as coach of the Packers was driven by his physical and mental health. (p.433) He remained the GM even as he handed the team off to Phil Bengston but didn't really like the way that Bengston was coaching the team in 1968. Vince was unhappy.
The owner of the Redskins courted him, and ultimately offered him stock in the team. Lombardi apparently wanted the Washington job for three reasons:
1) The money/stock
2) He really missed coaching.
3) He knew he had to get his wife out of Wisconsin because she was depressed and drinking pretty heavily.
He asked to be released from his contract and he was. Lombardi's decision to leave Green Bay and move to Washington was not well-received in America's Dairyland. In that sense, the analogy works.
But after his departure, Lombardi did not throw bombs at the organization in the media, either, and here the analogy breaks down. The words and deeds of Lombardi, and Reggie White, AFTER they left Green Bay are significantly different than those of Brett Favre.
I think that it makes sense that Favre is trying to draw the comparison....others have done the same thing. But I don't think the comparison is a good comparison and eventually people will see the differences.
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all of the time.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d ... nfirm=true
