con l'ultima scelta:

Jones, Brad OLB 6'3" 230 Colorado

Pick Analysis: Jones can run well and has outstanding speed. Teams are increasingly looking for players who can play three downs and/or on special teams, and Jones may provide just that kind of fit for the Packers.

Round One (9)
B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College
My Grade: A+. What more could the Packers have done in that position. With Monroe off the board, Raji became the next best option along with Orakpo. While Orakpo may have filled a bigger need, my increasing concerns over his ability to play coverage made Raji the pick I rooted for on the clock. Raji will be a rotational player in his first year with varying snaps depending on what kinds of defensive looks they show. Raji should be the anchor of our 3-4 defense in the future, though this leaves Ryan Pickett's short tenure with Green Bay in question.

General Consensus on the forum: It reminds me a bit of when the Packers selected AJ Hawk. With the draft unraveling as it did, it was almost a given that the Packers would go Raji despite some thoughts of Crabtree among others. While some wanted to go in a different direction, or trade down, almost everyone seems to be content with the selection.

Round One (26)
Clay Matthews, OLB, USC
My Grade: B+. The only thing holding this pick to a high standard is the amount the Packers had to give up to get Matthews. Ideally, it would have worked out so that the Packers would still have one of their two 3rd round selections remaining, but too bad. The Packers find what they believe to be the best pass rusher in the 3-4 (at the spot). Matthews' intensity and work ethic, along with OLB coach Kevin Green and the return of Nick Barnett from injury, will hopefully reinvigorate the linebackers who seemed to just go through the motions last year. Great selection who should see serious playing time.

General Consensus on the forum: A very heavily discussion decision. The trade seemed to overshadow the selection. With several mocks even projecting Matthews to be around in the 2nd round, Packers fans seem to be torn on the overall decision. Using hindsight, some fans try to dispute the need to send both 3rd rounders to NE to acquire a LB. Others seem to be okay with the selection and giddy over landing two first rounders which should result in two starters (or equivalents in terms of playing time).

Round Four (109)
T.J. Lang, OG/OT, Eastern Michigan
My Grade: A-. The only reason I don't give this my full support is because of one guy still available. That is TE Shawn Nelson. Still, Lang is a superb selection on the offensive line. What makes him better than one or two other pure guards I have rated higher is his ability to potentially kick out to RT. His versatility will provide depth at 3-4 positions on the line, which is always a plus. While it's a little optimistic to think Lang can be a starter next year, there's a solid chance. This was a 3rd rounder value who slipped to the beginning of the 4th round. Like Josh Sitton last year, look for Lang to impress early and often. He absolutely DOMINATED the Texas vs. Nation game.

General Consensus on the forum: From unpredictable to predictable in one year Ted Thompson has become. Packers fans had this one nailed weeks before the draft. He fits what the Packers like to do on offense from a versatility and athletic standpoints. Though a few wanted the team to pursue one of the bigger names (don't they always), most were very pleased with this selection. Might not be flashy or sexy, but these types of picks tend to have a fairly high chance of panning out.

Round Five (145)
Quinn Johnson, FB, LSU
My Grade: B. I can't say that I love the pick, but at fullback, he was the top prospect. He's a punishing lead blocker up the middle and loves to hit people in the jaw. Looking at this draft, you can see the type of mentality Thompson is trying to bring to the team and for that I like the pick...a lot. Still with players like James Casey, Macho Harris, and a couple other bruisers at RB available, this pick doesn't get me out of my seat. Still, Johnson will probably make the roster over one of the other two fullbacks (Kuhn in my opinion) so it will be an upgrade in that sense. As we look to get more physical, we'll love the pick in the fall, but right now, I can find a couple guys at other positions I'd rather have on the roster. When you factor in ST value, you can bump up the value a bit. You have players in Hall and Johnson that will love to get down field and unleash their LB instincts on a poor fragile returner.

General Consensus on the forum: The forum is split nearly straight down the middle on this selection, though neither side very emotional about the pick. We love the hard-nosed smash-you-in-the-jaw mentality he'll bring to the offense and also Special Teams, but not too many thought this was a huge position of need. Johnson is a kid that has the potential to be the best all-around fullback in Green Bay since William Henderson.

Round Five (162)
Jamon Meredith, OT/OG, South Carolina
My Grade: A-. There are obvious reasons why Meredith fell this far, but Ted Thompson took a smart, calculated gamble with him in the 5th round. He's a very intelligent kid who could turn out to be a great tackle or guard for the Packers in one to two years. He's a bit of a project for now, but the talent is certainly there. Looking at the draft, Meredith will be the pick that sticks out because of his big name. If he can get motivated, this could turn out to be a superb selection.

General Consensus on the forum: Everyone loves the effort Thompson has made and effort to add to the OL on the second day. Many expect him to hold down a future starting spot, possibly even at LT. Still, there are a handful who question his passion for football and work ethic. That's something he's going to have to get over if he is going to be the type of player Thompson and the fans think he could be.

Round Six (182)
Jarius Wynn, DE, Georgia
My Grade: B-. I'm still not going to be overly critical of Thompson's pick here. He wasn't firmly on my radar, but he's a great pick in this range. He has the length to play DE and is stout at the line of scrimmage. He's a nice developmental prospect who looks like he has some upside. A player who flashed very late in his career and could continue to improve in the NFL.

General Consensus on the forum: It seems like on one on the forum watches SEC football religiously because so few knew who he was. Of the few people who know him, know that his best football is probably ahead of him. They feel confident that he can hold the point of attack at 5-tech, but would be lucky to make the Practice Squad this year.

Round Six (187)
Brandon Underwood, CB/S, Cincinnati
My Grade: C+. Thompson continues his day of pretty good selections. Not the worst pick because of his natural athleticism, length, and upside. He's another player who was buried in the depths at a big name school then transferred to get more playing time. While he has the potential to develop into a Jarrett Bush type player with solid special teams value, I would have loved to grab Mike Mickens here. He's just a tad under 6'0, but had a great preseason ranking before slipping a bit due to his average senior year. Like the position Thompson decided to go here, but the player I would have liked one or two other guys before Underwood. Can't say I'm jumping for joy over this selection, but it's another solid player who can either play some free safety or corner.

General Consensus on the forum: This is about the point in the draft where fans just fan their favorite. Still those, with their head on straight realize that this could be nice selection. He has great versatility, which TT absolutely loves from all of his prospect. He obviously has the length and athleticism. He could be another Jarrett Bush.

Round Seven (218)
Brad Jones, OLB, Colorado

My Grade: N/A. Not having seen much of Jones through college, I can't fairly assess this pick. I love his potential and what he's shown in workouts. He moves well and has excellent speed and quickness. Based on his highlights, he does a nice job of closing in coverage and a great job of getting skinny to get to the quarterback. I look forward to seeing what he has to offer.

General Consensus on the forum: The forum all wanted their "favorite," but after some quick research, it seems as if fans are fairly please with the selection and already feel confident he has what it takes to be a nice long term project.

ecco gli undrafted...i più interessanti sembrano essere il WR jamarko simmons, ex compagno di squadra di greg jennings, del quale ha battuto i record a western michigan, e il RB tyrell sutton, caduto nei grades a causa di infortuni

The Packers won a five-team bidding war to sign versatile Northwestern University running back Tyrell Sutton.

The Packers kicked in a modest signing bonus and signed Sutton to a three-year deal according to his agent, Alonzo Shavers.

"It's a great place to go compete," Shavers said. "The big thing was that the Packers held to their word that they wouldn't draft another player at the position. They really wanted him. We evaluated the situation and we're excited for Tyrell to be there. We think he fits great."

Sutton is 5-feet-8 and 211 pounds. A combine invite, he ran the 40 in 4.68 seconds, did 12 reps on the bench and had a vertical jump of 33 inches.

He was Ohio's Mr. Football as a high school sdenior, and was a freshman All-American at Northwestern with 1,476 yards his first season.

Sutton had two serious injures -- an ankle in 2007 and a broken wrist in 2008 -- that kind of sidetracked him. When he was healthy last season, Sutton rushed for 890 yards with 305 yards receiving and eight touchdowns.

Sutton is known for being very tough and is built low to the ground. He excels at bouncing off tackles. An excellent receiver, Sutton could fill a need as a shifty third-down back for the Packers. He doesn't have breakaway speed, but he's very quick.

Other signings:

Kole Heckendorf, WR, North Dakota State (6-2, 191, 4.49 40-yard dash)

Played at Mosinee. . . . Redshirted, then started four seasons. . . . Finished with school-record totals in receptions (178) and yards (2,732). . . . Has been compared to Bill Schroeder. . . . "He ran extremely well at his pro day and has really good hands," one scout said. . . . Vertical jump of 38, broad jump of 10-4, bench press of 14 and Wonderlic of 14. . . . Older brother, Keith, is offensive coordinator and QB coach at Western Carolina. . . . "Kind of a frail kid," another scout said.

Carson Butler
, TE, Michigan (6-5, 250, 4.72)

Three-time letterwinner at Michigan...played in eight games in 2008, starting three...played in three games as a DE...two catches for 17 yards and three tackles...Could be a Connor Barwin-type player that goes from offense to defense.

Jamarko Simmons
, WR, Western Michigan (6-2, 231, 4.50)

Spent first two seasons as a running back...Had 104 catches for 1,276 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior. 84 catches for 980 yards and six touchdowns as a junior...Was a teammate of Greg Jennings at WMU.

JaRon Harris
, WR, South Dakota State (6-1, 200, 4.46) -- according to kffl.com

Father Ron Harris was a seventh-round pick of the Vikings in 1978 as a running back...JaRon grew up a Packers fan...Had 64 catches for 891 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior.

Andy Brodell
, WR, Iowa (6-3, 205, 4.53)

Agent Jack Bechta confirmed Brodell's signing....Reminds many of former Iowa receiver Kevin Kasper for his ability to cover and return kicks. Brodell had six catches for 159 yards and two touchdowns in the 2006 Alamo Bowl. In 2007 he suffered a torn hamstring against Wisconsin and missed the final eight games. In 2008, Brodell had 961 yards -- 533 receiving on 36 catches and four touchdowns.

Tryout invites:

Rhyan Anderson, DE, New Mexico State (6-4, 283, 4.61)

Former standout at Oak Creek High School, which has two other alum in the NFL (RB Brian Calhoun, Detroit, and TE Travis Beckum, picked by the Giants this weekend)....Top recruit from state in 2004 and rated No. 51 nationally by one recruiting firm. . . . After redshirting, played nine games for Miami Hurricanes in 2005 and one in '06 before being dismissed, according to one personnel director. . . . Surfaced at New Mexico State, starting in 2007 (one sack) and most of '08 (one sack). . . . "He sure didn't play well when I saw him," an NFC scout said. "They had him standing up some and they'd put him down.". . . . Worked out like a phenom last month, including a vertical jump of 38 and one-half inch, a broad jump of 10-5 and 25 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press. . . . Scored 15 on the Wonderlic intelligence test. . . . Green Bay has talked to him because his size fits the 3-4 defense. . . . Considered a character risk by some teams. . . . "You talk about a guy that had all the athleticism. He should have been dominating those guys he played against and he didn't," another scout said. . . . Has had two major shoulder operations.

Scott Witte, C, UW-River Falls (6-5, 328)

Native of Cedarburg...Started three-and-a-half years...Weighed about 360 pounds as a freshman before getting into shape.

Joe Lardinois, DE, North Dakota State (6-4 ½, 264, 4.81)

Played at Green Bay Notre Dame. . . . Three-year starter with 20 sacks, six forced fumbles and 143 tackles. . . . "He played left end there but I guess for most teams he'd probably project like a 3-4 outside backer rush guy," one scout said. "He does flash some pass-rush ability. Just not a real consistent player." . . . Vertical jump of 34½ , broad jump of 9-4 and bench of 15. . . . "Good numbers, but they don't translate to how he plays," the scout said. "Average toughness."

spero non si ricominci.......

NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reports that the Jets have waived QB Brett Favre off the reserve/retired list, making the probable Pro Football Hall of Famer a free agent.

Favre, 39, now is eligible to sign with any team, but he said he doesn’t plan on returning after his second retirement from the NFL.

“(Favre’s agent) Bus (Cook) and Mike (Tannenbaum, the Jets’ general manager) have been talking about this for a while,” Favre said in a statement. “Nothing has changed. At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football.”

According to Tannenbaum, the move had been in the works for some time.

“Brett requested his release some time ago,” Tannenbaum said in a statement. “He has not indicated any desire to return to football, and he remains retired. We wish him the best.”

NFL.com’s Steve Wyche reports that the move voids any stipulations in Favre’s contract with the Jets, including the one that required compensation to the Packers if the QB were traded to any other NFC North team. Under that clause, inserted last year when the Packers traded Favre to the Jets, New York would owe Green Bay three first-round draft picks.

Favre played one season with the Jets, leading them to a 9-7 record but missing the playoffs. He retired at the conclusion of the season, but the Jets still retained his rights until this afternoon.

:fischia:
