The Washington Redskins jumped into the Jay Cutler trade sweepstakes, but to what extent isn’t entirely known.

What is known, however, is that they made an attempt, much like the Denver Broncos’ attempt to land Matt Cassel. Which now begs the question: What is on Jason Campbell’s mind?

NFL Network’s Scott Hanson caught up with the Redskins’ QB shortly after the Thursday afternoon trade that sent Cutler to the Chicago Bears for Kyle Orton and several draft picks.

“This has taught me a valuable lesson about the business side of things, and the playing side of things,” said Campbell, who added that he was contacted by several of his teammates and coaches, “and that means a lot.”

Campbell told Hanson that he bumped into Vinny Cerrato, executive VP of football operations, in the hallway at the Redskins’ facilities on Thursday before the trade and Cerrato told him “nothing is going on.”

Byron Leftwich was born and raised in Washington D.C. Now he might have a career there as an NFL quarterback.

Leftwich visited the Washington Redskins on Friday, and the two sides are discussing a contract, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which noted the QB’s status with the Steelers:

      Leftwich does not yet have an offer from the Steelers, where he was the backup quarterback last season after an injury to Charlie Batch in the preseason.

      Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert, their director of football operations, have each said they’d like to re-sign both Leftwich and Batch. Both are unrestricted free agents.

Leftwich has said that he’d prefer to be a starter, as he was with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 to 2006, but according to The Washington Post, the Redskins told him that wouldn’t happen with them. Despite the Redskins’ recent attempt to trade him, Jason Campbell is the team’s starting QB.

However, Leftwich could be a cheaper, younger replacement for No. 2 QB Todd Collin

Comunque sembra che nell'incontro con Leftwich i Redskins siano stati chiari sul fatto che lui non andrebbe a competere con Campbell per il posto di starter, ma solo a fargli da back-up, al che il ragazzo s'è un tantino raffreddato. All'inizio della free agency Byron dichiarò che se deve fare la riserva preferisce tornare a Pittsburgh...certo fare le scarpe a Campbell è più semplice che farle a quell'altro.

Firmato Robert Thomas, ex prima scelta dei Rams di otto anni fa, l'anno scorso ai Raiders ma sostanzialmente inattivo per infortunio.

Aggiunge profondità nel ruolo di linebacker esterno, ma non risolve il problema a lunga scandenza.

Resta quindi valida l'opzione di prendere un talento con la 13 al draft, sempre che non si decida di andare sul DE o sull'OT, a questo punto credo che si prenderà il miglior giocatore disponibile indipendentemente dal ruolo.

Un buon calendario tutto sommato, ci sono diverse partite abbordabili, c'è il confronto con il venerabile Kyle, tre partite in casa in primetime con avversarie divisionali.

Tutto gira su questo, su Dallas, Giants e Phila, fondamentale vincerne il più possibile per spuntarla sulla division. Due di queste arrivano nelle ultime tre settimane, una vera prova di forza, si chiude a San Diego, partita insidiosissima, che non vorrei dover affrontare con un posto playoffs ancora libero.

Leggo oggi di un sempre più crescente interesse per Mark Sanchez, che spero Snyder e quel deficiente del suo Gm vogliano davvero scegliere. In tal cosa, difatti, voci vicine a Campbell danno per certa una richiesta di trade, e come dargli torto povero ragazzo, nel senso che hanno fatto oramai di tutto per fargli capire che non è lui il franchise qb che Snyder cerca ( a me sta più che bene eh...).

Spero siano solamente voci del cavolo, e che facciamo finalmente una cosa sensata, ovvero prendere ciò che ci serve: OT, OLB o DE.

Un grazie alla dirigenza per aver lasciato perdere Sanchez e le idee di tradeup, che ci avrebbero compromesso la prima scelta 2010.

Arriva Orakpo, di cui i giornali locali avevano parlato molto anticipandone sostanzialmente la chiamata, arriva il defensive end che dovevamo chiamare negli scorsi due drafts.

Vediamo quale ruolo saprà ricoprire, visto che non ha propriamente la stazza del DE per la Nfl, piuttosto quella di un OLB pesante.

Ecco il riassunto delle nostre scelte, con l'aiuto di Nfl.com.

Mia opinione personale in merito: solito draft lacunoso, prendiamo il defensive end che avremmo dovuto prendere sia l'anno scorso che due anni fa per mettere a posto una pass rush molto debole, a causa della propensione di Snyder a gettare via scelte non si sono potute coprire tutte le forti esigenze del roster, e resta un vuoto molto preoccupante tra gli offensive tackle. Non capisco come Campbell possa svilupparsi e trovare fiducia con una linea dove Samuels e Jansen sono a rischio inortunio, e dietro di loro c'è Stephon Heyer, che ha già dimostrato inadeguatezza al ruolo di tackle Nfl.

Kevin Barnes mi pare una buona scelta, avevamo solo tre corners buoni per la rotazione, anche se Smoot è sceso di gradimento dopo il suo ritorno a Washington. Inizierà nella nickel, viene buono perchè sa giocare molto bene a zona, il nostro schema, ed è un colpitore di quelli che ti fanno pagare la ricezione, ho trovato un video interessante su di lui, quando ho tempo lo posto.

I due linebackers aggiungono profondità al reparto, che ne aveva bisogno, ma sono convinto che se avessimo avuto una seconda scelta avremmo potuto trovare una parte della soluzione al problema. Così, invece, aggiungiamo due giocatori allo special teams e non abbiamo nulla per le emergenze, e Fletcher dovrà fare l'uomo ovunque con un anno ddi più sul groppone. Cody Glenn, tra l'altro, era un giocatore offensivo, ed ha fatto il LB a Nebraska solamente nell'ultimo anno.

Eddie Williams è un ibrido tight end/h back che dovrebbe inserirsi bene nel nostro schema, vista l'età di Sellers potrebbe essere un suo sostituto immagino, mentre Marko Mitchell è un ricevitore molto fisicato ed alto che dovrebbe servire per la West Coast Offense, anche se abbiamo già due ricevitori con quelle caratteristiche.

Round 1, Pick 13 (13) Brian Orakpo DE 6'3" 263 Texas
Pick Analysis:Orakpo unexpectedly falls to the Redskins at No. 13. Though he was projected by many as a hybrid rusher, Orakpo will play as a conventional edge rusher alongside Pro Bowler Albert Haynesworth. With the big man occupying double teams inside, Orakpo has an opportunity to record double-digit sacks in his first season due to a high number of man-on-man blocks off the edge.

Round 3, Pick 16 (80) Kevin Barnes CB 6'0" 187 Maryland
Pick Analysis:The Redskins pick up an athletic cover corner with good size and speed. Although the Maryland standout missed the last half of the season with an injury, he flashed good ability as a zone defender. With the 'Skins, he should contribute as a nickel or dime defender in their sub-package.

Round 5, Pick 22 (158) (From Vikings) Cody Glenn LB 6'0" 244 Nebraska
Pick Analysis:The Redskins pick up a versatile prospect with excellent special teams potential. Glenn has only one year of experience at linebacker, but he's intriguing because of his athleticism and toughness.

Round 6, Pick 13 (186) Robert Henson OLB 6'0" 240 TCU
Pick Analysis:Henson is a shorter linebacker who runs really well. He will provide the Redskins with special teams help, but he's not ready yet to contribute consistently on the defensive side of the ball.

Round 7, Pick 12 (221) (From Vikings) Eddie Williams TE 6'1" 239 Idaho
Pick Analysis:Williams is an H-back/fullback prospect who has struggled with injuries. As a result, he was not able to work out this spring. He may be a candidate to fill in for Mike Sellers at times with the Redskins offense.

Round 7, Pick 34 (243) (Compensatory selection) Marko Mitchell WR 6'4" 218 Nevada
Pick Analysis:Mitchell has great speed, given his size. He gives Washington yet another tall receiver to go with the pair they drafted last year, Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. He is just the second player drafted by the Redskins on the offensive side of the football.

Siamo vicini alla firma di Jeremy Bridges, giocatore con 6 anni di esperienza Nfl che ha un passato da titolare ai Panthers, che ci darà sicuramente una mano per la linea offensiva, essendo ottima polizza contro età ed infortuni delle guardie.

Provini anche per DJ Hackett, Roydell Wiliams e Kelley Washington, anche se abbiamo già quindicimila ricevitori a roster e non capisco a che mazza servano questi.
