It's personal with you, but not with me. I watched football before Favre was born.
I think there is ample evidence that Favre played for himself and not the team. The pursuit of the records, playing when he was hurt badly enough he shouldn't have been, trying to "make something happen" instead of protecting the ball, taking the offseason off instead of working to improve with his teammates....
His former best friend, Mark Chmura, once said "Favre is for Favre, plain and simple". Teddy Atlas, in New York, has cast Favre as a "selfish player". Did Favre want to play for the Vikings to help the Vikings or so that he could hurt Ted Thompson? Are the Jets any better off at QB now than they were a year ago?
I could go on and on for many, many paragraphs citing examples and in some cases Favre's own words, but I won't. You disagree, and you're entitled to your opinion. I don't think you're insane but I think your devotion to Favre borders on idolization.
"The way he played was special".
How so? Is it more special than the way Mark Tauscher plays? More special than Donald Driver? More special than Aaron Kampman? How?
"He played to win".
And Al Harris doesn't? Chad Clifton doesn't? Where was Favre when these guys were busting their asses in the offseason to improve their chances of winning? Oh, I remember.....he was mowing the lawn and wondering if his teammates were worth returning for.
"He played the game with passion".
Who doesn't? IMO, it takes more passion to committ to the team on a fulltime basis and work your tail off in the offseasn to improve than it does to committ to the team on a part time basis while vacationing for 5 months, but that's JMO.
And my personal, all-time favorite:
Quote:
he's the ultimate competitor
JMO, but I think an ultimate competitor would work in the offseason to improve himself and he'd be a little more responsive to the coaching staff's suggestions that he try to limit his turnovers. I think he wouldn't just throw it into coverage on first and ten at the end of close games, or in overtime, but would do something else so he could keep competing.
What makes Favre more of a competitor in your opinion than Nick Barnett, or Aaron Kampman, or Donald Driver? These guys bust their hump in the offseason to improve themselves while he wonders if he wants to play or not. IMO, Favre is not the ultimate competitor....not even close.
Do I need to go on? Am I really insane? Or do I just have a very different point of view from yours?

But the rumor that is making a few rounds around the NFL has Green Bay and Detroit gonna talk trade. I find it interesting that I proposed this trade in my January mock draft. Again some say Green Bay and Detroit would never trade because they are in the same division but I am not so sure.
Speculation from some who are talking about this rumor has the Lions sending Green Bay pick 20 in round 1 and pick 1 in round 2 for Green Bay's pick 9 in round 1 and pick 9 in round 4.
Having number retired not on Favre's mind
By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel
Feb. 11, 2009
In a conference call with reporters, quarterback Brett Favre said he hadn't heard anything from the Green Bay Packers but was aware that they still wanted to retire his number.
Favre said it could be awhile before it happens.
"I haven't even thought about that," Favre said, chuckling. "But the teammates I played with in Green BAy and the fans, nothing has changed since Day One. It's a shame what unfolded throughout this whole thing. I don't know, I don't have an answer for that right now. It may be five years, it may be first game. I have no idea. Honestly, I haven't even thought about that."
Asked if it would take the departure of general manager Ted Thompson for him to reconcile with the organization, Favre said, "I don't know. He had his reasoning, I had my reasoning. Who's to say who's right or who's wrong. He had a plan. I'm not mad at him for that. Other people may be.
"I don't know. It's a touchy situation. I know my stay in Green Bay was unbelievable. Unbelievable. Nothing can take that away. Not one person in that organization who hasn't been outstanding to me throughout my career. It's unfortunate, but at some point it will be dealt with."
Later, Favre was asked if anyone in the Packers organization had called and said anything to him.
"LIke what?" he said. "No, I haven't talked to anyone. Several players have sent me some nice messages."
In discussing his reasons for retiring, Favre continually pointed to the problem he had with a biceps tendon in his throwing arm. He said he had the choice of having it repaired with arthroscopic surgery or with rest, but he figured it was something that he wasn't willing to push anymore.
The injury manifested itself in a sore shoulder and a decrease in velocity on his throws.
"It very well could be fine," Favre said. "Then again could linger and bother me through the year. I just thought it was a wake-up call."
Other subjects Favre addressed:
-- He said he filled out the paperwork necessary for the Jets to file his retirement papers.
-- He understood why people were skeptical about this retirement being final, but he said he's OK with the concept of retirement and doesn't think he needs to prove anything else in his career.
-- He said he did not think he was a disruption for the Jets despite some of the criticism he received from teammates after the season. He said he "honestly believes I was more of a positive than a negative."
-- He understands that his arm could get better and the lure of playing again might come back, but he said he's not willing to take the chance that the injury could reappear and he would be as ineffective as he was the last five weeks of the season.
-- He didn't completely deny that his agent, James (Bus) Cook, inquired about the possibility of the Jets releasing him, but he said that he was not seeking his release and was ready to call it quits permanently.
Assuming Brett Favre stays retired, the Green Bay Packers are going to have to ship a seventh-round pick in 2010 to the New York Jets as part of the trade they made in August.
