fonte PFT

Re: Smash Mouth Football Baby, Pittsburgh Style - Draft Jordy!!!
Anyways, the Steelers had around $980,000 of salary cap space. Dumping Davenport saves $1 million. Therefore, they have $1.98 million of cap space.
This should be just enough to sign the draft picks....it ain't enough real money, but cap dollars - with the Rule of 51, ~$2 million should be enough.
Something else will have to happen before the regular season begins...either cut someone or restructure some contracts....the Rule of 51 only applies during the offseason so that will add two players to the cap total, plus the Steelers should enter the regular season with atleast $1 milllion of cap space...incase anyone goes on the IR.
So, I am thinking, with this move they have enough cap space for the draft picks. I believe they will need to free around $2 million additional cap space before the regular season begins...maybe a bit less than $2 mil, but close.
Quel "something else will have to happen before the regular season begins" può siginificare imo:
1) altri tagli - "Lolo" passa in testa alla lista dei papabili
2) contratto medio-lungo a Starks - io ci spero
3) Hines accetta di ristrutturare

There is another reason Davenport was released: the Steelers did not want to part with Gary Russell, a second-year free agent whom the coaches think can develop into a top-notch NFL running back.pandu86 wrote: arriva la conferma per Davenport...tagliati anche Mike Lorello S, Doug Legursky C e il longsnapper Jared Retkofsky.

Re: Smash Mouth Football Baby - Pittsburgh Style
Is Hills what Pittsburgh’s O-line needs?
On one hand, most analysts agree that the Pittsburgh Steelers did an excellent job of acquiring athletes during the 2008 NFL Draft. When you pick up talented players like Rashard Mendenhall, Limas Sweed and Dennis Dixon in one draft, it's obviously exciting. On the other hand, most analysts also agreed that the Steelers had two needs to fill entering last month's draft. Specifically, they were along the offensive line and at defensive end.
Well, the team didn’t take a defensive end. But it did draft an offensive tackle, albeit later than most were expecting (Round 4).
Regardless of where he was taken, the question is begged: Is Tony Hills a future starter on the offensive line?
During the 24 games the 6-foot-6, 305-pounder started at left tackle for the Texas Longhorns, Hills managed a grade of 83.21 percent for blocking consistency on 1,681 snaps. Beyond that, he accumulated 131 knockdowns and 17 touchdown-resulting blocks, and gave up only four quarterback sacks and seven pressures on 743 passing plays.
Evidenced by the numbers, Hills was a terrific player for the Longhorns. Good enough, in fact, to be named a Walter Camp First-Team All-American in 2007 and an All-Big 12 First-Team selection.
Here’s the negative, though: Hills has been injured on multiple occasions during his career. After starting 11 games in 2007, in fact, he went down with a broken fibula in his left leg. Adding to the injury concerns is the fact that he suffered a career-threatening knee injury which required reconstructive surgery that repaired nerve damage in the knee during high school.
With that in mind, can his body hold up to an NFL pounding?
On the upside, Hills showed tremendous heart in coming back from that high school knee injury to make it in college. After all, it was the kind of injury that required some grueling rehabilitation. What’s more, Hills was a tight end in high school; so he also had to change positions during the whole ordeal, and he did it very successfully.
When the Steelers decided to draft Hills, then, they took a guy with excellent athleticism and a proven track record at a big-time university. They also selected a guy with heart and determination. Yes, he’s been injured -- and that’s a concern.
But they got the guy in the fourth round, and therefore didn’t have to take a huge chance.
Figure on Hills getting a shot at the starting rotation in 2009, perhaps at the guard position. As long as Hills can stay away from the injury bug, he’s not a guy to count out.
Hopefully for the Steelers, Hills will prove to be just what they wanted when they grabbed him during the draft.

Re: Smash Mouth Football Baby - Pittsburgh Style
Steelers Ownership Transition
For the past two years the Rooney family has had discussions about a restructuring of the family’s ownership of the Steelers in order to ensure compliance with NFL ownership policies and the continuation of Rooney family ownership and operation of the team.
Pittsburgh Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney, the oldest son of late team founder Art Rooney, wants to stay in the football business while some of his four brothers plan to get out of the NFL and focus their business efforts on their racetracks and other interests. Dan Rooney, and his son, Steelers President Art Rooney II, are arranging a financing plan to buy Dan’s brothers' shares in the team in order to continue substantial ownership of the franchise by the Rooneys.
The other Rooney brothers – Art Jr., Timothy, Patrick and John – each currently has an ownership interest in the Steelers. Another related family, the McGinleys, also owns a minority interest in the team. The Rooney family owns racetracks in New York and Florida, and like many in recent years, these facilities have added forms of gaming that are inconsistent with NFL gambling policy.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell asked former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue to serve as a league representative in discussions with the family in order to reach an agreement on the separation of the gambling interests and on a restructuring of ownership going forward if part of the team is sold.
Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney stated, “I have spent my entire life devoted to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the National Football League. I will do everything possible to work out a solution to ensure my father’s legacy of keeping the Steelers in the Rooney family and in Pittsburgh for at least another 75 years.”
Steelers President Art Rooney II stated, “There is no reason to believe that the current internal discussions will have any impact on our fans or on our team this season or in the seasons to come.”

The Steelers reached agreement with quarterback Dennis Dixon of Oregon on a three-year contract that includes a $130,000 signing bonus.
