The 49ers have signed free-agent guard Jeb Terry, who has played in 30 NFL games with one start. Terry was a fifth-round draft pick (No. 146 overall) of the Buccaneers in 2004 from North Carolina. He was cut during training camp last year and was out of the league.

Terry (6-5, 300) played 10 games for Tampa Bay in 2006. He played all 16 games in 2005, mostly on special teams. He played four games as a rookie. Terry turns 27 next month.

Ah....we want Colt.

Sembra che l'episodio che ha coinvolto i Niners non sia isolato. Ecco le speculazioni in merito da parte di Herman Edwards, che sembra si sia sfogato per aver perduto un paio di free agents.

The tampering floodgates could be opening.

On the same day that the NFL nailed the Niners for talking to Bears linebacker Lance Briggs without formal authorization while the two teams were talking about a possible trade of the Pro Bowler, Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards bemoaned the fact that his team’s effort to sign a couple of coveted free agents was hampered by the fact that other teams apparently had an improper head start.

Regarding the Chiefs’ inability to acquire guys like center Jeff Faine (who signed with the Bucs on the first day of free agency) and kicker Josh Brown (who landed quickly with the Rams), Edwards said, “There were probably some deals done before [the launch of free agency].  We didn’t cheat.  We abided by the rules.  That’s how you’re supposed to do it, and that’s what we did.”

Implicit in Edwards’ remarks is that the Bucs and Rams did cheat.

Trade per arrivare a recuperare qualche scelta smarrita per strada?

If the 49ers have a chance to get pass-rushing outside linebacker Quentin Groves of Auburn with the No. 29 overall pick, they might be wise to take him. Otherwise, they could look to bail out of the first-round slot in the draft.

If the Falcons are looking to move up, the 49ers could trade pick No. 29 to the Falcons to move back to No. 37 overall. Using the draft-pick trade chart, the 49ers would be owed 110 points.

Therefore, the 49ers could receive the Falcons' fourth pick of the fourth round, as well as one of the Falcons' seventh-round selections.

If such a trade were to happen, the 49ers' would have no first-round picks, but two seconds (Nos. 37 and 39), one third (No. 75) and two fourth-round picks at Nos. 4 and 8 in that round, as well as one sixth-round pick and potentially two seventh-round selections.

Not only do the 49ers forfeit a fifth-round pick, their swapping of third-round selections is the equivalent of losing a high sixth-round pick, John Clayton and Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times point out.

So what do the 49ers do now, with dirty, red and empty hands?

One, review their book of cheats, like any good gamer would.

Two, reorder their cheating priorities. Don't cheat to get a guy you can't get, or one who won't assuredly and dramatically improve your team, like Briggs. If that's the plan, then cheat to get Peyton Manning.

Three, succeed at cheating. Nobody likes a bad cheater a lot worse than a good one.

And four, don't go on and on about how you were wronged by the mean old cop. You lost only a fifth-round draft choice, which meant whatever you did probably wasn't worth the bother. After all, as the saying goes, it can't be much of a crime if you don't get much time.

Tutti sani per ora a 49ersland

In checking with the 49ers, all of the players who were injured last season are participating in the team's offseason conditioning program.

That goes for everyone, including cornerback Tarell Brown, who sustained partial tears of the ACL and MCL in his right knee in the season-finale against the Browns. The injury did not require surgery, and Brown is back running around.

The same goes for Joe Cohen, Jay Moore, Melvin Oliver, C.J. Brewer, Manny Lawson, Alex Smith and Shaun Hill.

* * *

Jonas Jennings is dealing with a personal family issue. Coach Mike Nolan and GM Scot McCloughan are aware of the situation and have excused him from being in the Bay Area, so he can be with his family.

Smith parla per la prima volta da diversi mesi:

"I think we're both looking forward to putting last year behind us," Smith said. "I've talked to him several times and we're both excited about it. I know I definitely am. Because I know that's not a reflection on either of us. We're both better than that, and I think we're looking forward to erasing that and proving to people, not only in this building but everywhere, that we're definitely going to move on."

Smith and Nolan did not seem to communicate very well last season. Smith said they spoken openly to each other.

"We talked, and we continue to talk about it and understand what happened last year and we're moving on," Smith said. "We both understand each other. There were things I look back at and wish I could have over again. (The) thing to do is to learn from it and not let it happen again and letting coach Nolan know that he can expect different from last year."

Speriamo che riescano davvero a mettersi al faccenda alle spalle.

--Currently, he is throwing three times this week and will continue to pick it up. He is still in a toss and playing-catch phase. "I'm just trying to work my arm back into throwing shape," he said. The projected goal is to take another month to get it where it needs to be.
Sta rientrando pian piano in forma

--New O.C. Mike Martz has not work with Smith on his throwing mechanics, but he has worked with Smith in meetings and on his drops.

--As far as learning the system: "It's still early, but it's definitely started." Coaches were off this week, but the week prior, they worked on some things. It's started with QB coach Ted Tollner and coach Martz - "at least the initiation of installing all of this stuff. And what's going to be expected of us and what to expect. We're in that installation phase right now."

--Smith said he is excited about the chance to work with Martz as his offensive coordinator. After all, Martz is "a guy who understands quarterbacks and the fundamentals of the position. To pick his brain, gain that knowledge, and have him coach us is a big opportunity."

Si inizia con il nuovo sistema e Martz parte dai fondamentali.

Tight end Billy Bajema signed his one-year, $927,000 tender as a restricted free agent to remain with the 49ers.

Bajema, 25, is a three-year veteran and was eligible to negotiate with other teams. If he had signed with another team, the 49ers would have had the opportunity to match the offer sheet to retain his services. They would have received a seventh-round draft pick as compensation if they declined to match. (He was a seventh-round pick in 2005.)

Bajema did not take any visits during the signing period. He is a blocking specialist who has not caught a pass since his rookie season, when he hauled in five receptions for 54 yards. Bajema was the 49ers' only restricted free agent. They declined to tender cornerback B.J. Tucker, who spent the season on injured reserve.

Here are a couple questions the staff here at Instant 49ers asked Mr. Kiper . . .

Instant 49ers: Toward the end of the first round which offensive linemen will be in the discussion? Where do you see the 49ers going with that No. 29 pick?

Kiper: "If you're asking. 'Who's the best offensive tackle on the board at that point?' It's probably Gosder Cherilus from Boston College. And I say that because he was a left tackle at B.C., and he's not going to be a left tackle in the NFL. He's going to be a right tackle. (The 49ers) have Joe Staley to be your left tackle. Now you have Cherilus at right tackle.

"He did struggle some at left tackle, but I thought he got better late in the year. But he did struggle. He's a right tackle. He had a great year as a right tackle as a junior. He looked to be one of the top-15 seniors coming into this season based on how he played at right tackle. If he would've translated that to left tackle, he would've been a top-10 pick. That didn't happen. That's why people say he's a right tackle. Obviously as a right tackle, he drops down a bit. That's why he maybe gets into the late first round. I'd say a Cherilus at that point would be a guy you'd have to consider."

Instant 49ers: Who are the guys who could start off at guard and eventually move to tackle?

Kiper: "Cherilus is a guy you'd want to be your right tackle. Nobody else I see at that point . . . I wouldn't see Carl Nicks of Nebraska that high. Nobody has the versatility at that particular juncture.

"I'm going to give you a guy. I'm only saying this personally because I don't think a lot of people feel the way I do, and we'll see how this turns out three or four years from now. But I think Chilo Rachal from USC is a guy . . . and I'm not saying he'd go there (No. 29), if you traded early-to-mid-second - I think that's where most people think he'll come off the board. I say that because he was a guard at USC who played a little right tackle early in his career, at least worked at that position. At 6-5, 315, with very good feet, strong, tough kid, he could be a right tackle. Here's a guard who could be a right tackle.

"If you're asking who I think the better player is, he or Cherilus? I think he's a better player than Cherilus, but he's a guard. He can play right tackle. If you want to roll the dice there, you could take him. That would be another option, and a kid I'm very high on. Outside of the league, I don't think many observers have Rachal as highly rated as I do."

Instant 49ers: Of those outside linebacker/defensive ends who only have value to 3-4 teams, how many of those guys can step in and make an immediate impact?

Kiper: "The guy who'll have the biggest impact is (Vernon) Gholston, but he'll be long gone (when the 49ers pick). After Gholston, you'd be looking at probably Cliff Avril from Purdue, you'd be looking at Bruce Davis from UCLA, Quentin Groves from Auburn. If you want another guy. Marcus Howard from Georgia could be a fourth- or fifth-round guy. I mention him for the Colts because he's the kind of guy they want.

"But I'd say for the 49ers, I'd look at Davis, Avril or Groves to kind of fit what they're looking for. . . . I wanted to give you one other guy, Curtis Johnson, a defensive end/outside linebacker from Clark in Atlanta. He is another kid who fits the mold and would be ideally suited to be that 3-4 outside linebacker."

Questa non me l'aspettavo proprio......

The Miami Dolphins finally resolved the lingering status of Jason Taylor today, by trading him to the San Francisco 49ers for a first and third round pick. The picks (29th and 70th overall) give the Dolphins a smattering of picks in this year's draft. Miami's new Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Bill Parcells, now owns the 1st, 29th, 32nd, 58th, 64th and 70th picks of the NFL draft.
