Strength and conditioning coach Tim Buss experienced the agony and the ecstasy of life with the Cubs in a few short hours Tuesday.

When the Cubs began practice in the morning, Aramis Ramirez pointed to a wrecked '95 Nissan Sentra near the Cubs bullpen and asked: "Hey, 'Bussy,' what's your car doing on the ramp?"

Buss looked over at the wreck and replied: "That's not my car."

But then Buss did a double take.

"Dude," he said to Ramirez. "That's my car!"

Buss soon discovered his car was demolished beyond recognition, but this was no ordinary crime. The car windows all had been smashed in, the front, back and sides all were severely dented and the smoking guns—a couple of baseball bats and balls—were strategically placed in the windshield.

"I figured (Jon) Lieber, (Kerry) Wood immediately, (Ryan) Dempster …" he said. "Then I realized it was every pitcher we have."

The Cubs players played dumb while Buss silently fumed and wondered how he was going to tell his wife, who was the actual owner of the car.

"It's a shame," Lieber said with a straight face. "What kind of person would do something like that? It really just shocks me. I'm sure she'll understand."

After the workout ended, Dempster told Buss to "quit pouting" and come with him to the weight room to "see something."

As they walked out the back door, Buss saw several players and a 2008 Nissan Xterra parked in the walkway. Dempster gave him the keys for the new SUV, valued at about $25,000.

"I thought they lost their mind," Buss said. "I thought, 'I'm going to have to call Dr. Phil and have a team meeting.' I couldn't figure out what they were doing."

Buss nearly was moved to tears by the players' generosity.

"They're great guys," he said.

Se ricordo bene Johnson era un buon Leadoff...forse vogliono vedere ch batte meglio da leadoff o semplicemente hanno allungato la panca

Matt Murton è stato mandato in AAA.

Reed Johnson: 31 anni, .281/.342/.410 in carriera, con 95 di OPS+ (.796 OPS in minor league)
Matt Murton: 26 anni, .296/.365/.455 in carriera, con 108 di OPS+ (.850 OPS in minor league)

Murton è un miglior difensore, specie a destra (dove Johnson può giocare ma molto male).
Si è detto che Johnson serva per giocare contro i mancini. Effettivamente Johnson non è male contro i mancini: .308/.371/.462 per .833 di OPS. Notevole.
Però se guardiamo un po' meglio vediamo che Murton contro i mancini abbia: .326/.399/.510 per .909 di OPS. Ops, appunto.
Allora forse è perchè Johnson è più completo e può battere anche contro i destri, mentre presumibilmente Murton non è in grado di farlo. Johnson contro i destri: .267/.328/.383 per .711 OPS. Murton: .280/.346/.425 per .771 OPS. Ri-ops.
Vabbè dai, se non è per le prestazioni globali, non è per il maggior potenziale dovuto alla giovane età, non è dovuto alla difesa, non è dovuto agli splits contro i destri e non è dovuto agli splits contro i mancini, sarà sicuramente dovuto al baserunning, giusto? Johnson non ha mai rubato più di 8 basi in una stagione, Murton mai più di 5. Ma Johnson ha avuto persino una stagione in cui ha avuto più CS di SB. In carriera ha il 63% di SB%, Murton ha il 72%. Murton è persino un corridore migliore!
Non so più che dire. Forse è la disciplina al piatto a fare la differenza. In media (su 162 partite) Johnson come BB/K ha 32/102 (wow, che schifo), Murton ha 49/69.
Ah, ecco trovato il motivo per preferire Johnson! In media viene colpito 21 volte a stagione, Murton solo 3. Ecco Matt, torna in AAA, lavora sugli HBP e poi ne riparliamo!

Secondo il ns manager la differenza la fa la maggior capacità di J di giocare CF. Comunque per Murton, che a me è sempre piaciuto molto, si parla di sistemazione in Major League, e cio mi spiace ancor di più, anche se credo che lui voglia giocare e lo meriti

Le 64 partite giocate in tutta la carriera effettivamente fanno tutta la differenza del mondo.
In realtà Fukudome sarebbe un CF naturale, quindi in un mondo normale sarebbe stato lui il CF di riserva (con Murton a destra).
Rimane che ci sia un giocatore inferiore sul roster, e che Murton ora verrà ceduto a qualche squadra in cambio di molto poco presumibilmente. Contento Piniella...
