Urlacher: Favre best QB ever
22-10 record against Bears likely swayed linebacker
By Vaughn McClure | Tribune reporter
The rookie wasn't in awe. Not of Lambeau Field. Not of the veteran gunslinger standing on the opposite side.
Yet Brian Urlacher couldn't contain his giddiness that October afternoon in 2000, the day he lunged toward Brett Favre and pulled down the Green Bay quarterback for a 6-yard loss.
"It was awesome, man, because it was Brett Favre," Urlacher said Tuesday, reflecting on his third career sack. "I was young and still not sure what I was doing out there, but I got him down.
"It's good to reflect on that moment, because he just pounded us in the middle of my career."
Urlacher and the Bears won't have to worry about being torched by No. 4, at least for now. Favre decided to retire after 17 seasons, a decision somewhat unexpected considering the fine season he just had.
The news immediately set off a chain of comparisons in the sports world, with many pondering where Favre ranks among the all-time great quarterbacks. Urlacher said it's no contest:
"He's No. 1. He has only one ring, but that doesn't matter. Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl, and some people consider him the best. I consider Brett Favre the best."
Urlacher's conclusion makes sense considering Favre's successes against the Bears. He was 22-10, including a 12-3 mark at Soldier Field, while facing 21 different Bears' starting quarterbacks. Four of Favre's single-game, career-high passing numbers occurred against the Bears, including a 99-yard touchdown pass to Robert Brooks in 1995.
"His best play against us? He probably had about 50 of them, the way he used to beat us," Urlacher said. "All I know is he never completed an underhand pass against our defense."
And Favre never missed a game against the Bears as part of his record 253 consecutive starts.
"That's unreal to me," Urlacher said. "That is an incredible streak. A lot of guys could only dream of playing that many games through their careers."
As things stand, Urlacher will have the distinction of being the last player to return an interception for a touchdown against him. The linebacker picked off a pass and raced 85 yards for a score in the Bears' 35-7 romp over the Packers in December. Urlacher intercepted Favre in the earlier meeting between the teams too.
"He threw that pick the first game this year and I told him, 'You gave me a gift on that one.' And he kind of smiled at me," Urlacher said. "We always talked a little bit to each other, but nothing too vulgar, nothing too crazy."
Urlacher intercepted Favre three times in eight seasons, while Favre finished with an NFL record 286 career interceptions.
"He always was going to try to win the game. He never quits," Urlacher said. "As a football player, you respect that about a guy. I think that's why he has had so many interceptions in his career. I think those numbers are a little skewed because of how many times he tried to bring his team back."
Urlacher might sound like a Favre fan, but he contends he's not—at least not anymore.
"When I was a kid I was," he said, "but when I came to Chicago, Favre just became a rival.
"You know what? Think about why you never see him wearing a helmet in his commercials. It's because people know him. And here's a guy like me … I have to wear a helmet in my commercials because people don't know me like that. It's as simple as this: Everywhere you go, people love Brett Favre."

Play without fear and you will be successful! See you at center ice.

Mi dispiace assai che Favre si sia ritirato!
Dopo 16 stagioni in cui ero abitutato a vedere il #4 alla guida dei Packers sarà parecchio strano non vederlo prendere gli snap nella prossima stagione!

Green Bay - Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss posted a statement on his website about Brett Favre's retirement:
"It has been a blessing and a privilege to watch Brett Favre in his prmie, with the MVP's and the Super Bowls."
"He is a great competitor and he will be missed."
"All I can say is 'Brett, I love you and I enjoyed my time watching you. In my heart, a legend is stepping away from the game."
