Eagles sign free-agent cornerback Samuel to 6-year deal

The Eagles wasted little time making an offer, reportedly worth around $57 million with $20 million guaranteed, on the first day of the free agent period.

Sembrava che Shaun Rogers dovesse finire ai Bengals, ma....

It has been reported that the trade that would have sent Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to Cincinnati was rejected by the league. The reason for the rejection isn't clear -- Mark Curnutte of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the deal ran afoul of salary-cap rules.

così alla fine viene mandato sempre in Ohio ma a Cleveland (che ha finalmente deciso di metter su una bella difesa):

Shaun Rogers' career as a Lion headed to a bizarre ending, with roller-coaster trade proposals Friday that spanned from one corner of Ohio to the other.

A deal that would have sent Rogers to the Bengals fell through, prompting the Lions to turn to the Browns as a trade partner for the 370-pound nose tackle.

The Lions and Browns centered their talks on a deal late Friday that would give the Lions cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round pick in the April draft. In the trade with the Bengals, the Lions would have gotten third- and fifth-round draft picks, also this year.

There was no immediate announcement from the Lions or Browns on the Rogers deal. An announcement was expected today, pending league approval.

Lions officials announced the trade with Cincinnati at about 3 p.m., and it was reported on the Bengals' official Web site. However, Bengals management never made an official announcement.

There was no comment from the Bengals or Lions on why the trade was off, but there was speculation the NFL canceled it because of salary-cap issues.

The Lions were operating under a deadline to deal Rogers. If Rogers was on the roster at 12:01 a.m. today, he was due a roster bonus of $1 million.

Lions president Matt Millen said last week that if the Lions had to pay the bonus, they would keep Rogers. It is common for players to postpone the payment date if trade talks are ongoing.

Bodden, 6-foot-1 and 193 pounds, made the Browns roster in 2003 as an undrafted rookie out of Duquesne in Pittsburgh.

He became a full-time starter, when healthy, in 2005, starting 11 games. He started nine games in 2006 and missed the other seven with an injury but returned in 2007 to start all 16 games.

Bodden set career highs for interceptions (six), pass breakups (15) and tackles (88) in '07, but he fell into disfavor with the coaches, who thought he did not play up to his potential.

Having the Cincinnati deal fall through might have given the Lions a better deal. They get a draft pick and a starting cornerback who fits the mold that coach Rod Marinelli wants for his defense.

Marinelli has vowed to get younger on defense. Bodden, 26, has the youth and size that could help upgrade Detroit's secondary.

I campioni stanno perdendo troppi pezzi grossi.

The New York Jets and guard Alan Faneca have tentatively agreed to a four-year, $32 million deal that includes roughly $23 million in guarantees, ESPN's Michael Smith reports. Faneca is expected to travel to New York this weekend, when the deal will be finalized. The Jets plan to play Faneca at left guard.

J. Smith ai Niners.... peccato, a noi sarebbe servito come il pane..:disgusto:

The San Franciso 49ers and defensive end Justin Smith agreed to a six-year, $45 million contract that included $20 million in guarantees.

Smith, who had played all of his seven previous seasons in the NFL in Cincinnati, was given the franchise tag by the Bengals in 2007.

Smith was the fourth overall pick in the 2001 draft out of Missouri. He has 43 ½ career sacks but managed only two last season. Smith has played in 16 games every season except his rookie campaign when he made 15 appearances.

Michael Smith covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

According to a source, Donte' Stallworth, who played last season with the New England Patriots, agreed to terms on a contract with the Browns. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

I Bills prendono Stroud:

The Bills acquired three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Marcus Stroud in a trade with Jacksonville on Saturday in Buffalo's latest and most significant move to revamp its porous defense.

In exchange, the Bills gave up an undisclosed number of draft picks.

In another move Saturday, the Bills signed former Minnesota defensive tackle Spencer Johnson to a five-year contract.

Berrian dovrebbe aver trovato casa in Minnesota:

The Minnesota Vikings reached an agreement with free agent wide receiver Bernard Berrian on Saturday, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

Berrian, the former Chicago Bears wide receiver, was spotted at the Vikings training facility on Saturday morning. He peeked his head inside the facility with a Vikings hat on while media gathered for a news conference to introduce new safety Madieu Williams.

Coach Brad Childress joked that Berrian was "not here against his will."

It has been a busy first two days in free agency for the Vikings, who also signed fullback Thomas Tapeh on Friday.

Williams is touted as a hybrid safety big enough to tackle and capable of man-to-man coverage against receivers. He got a six-year deal worth $33 million, with almost $13 million guaranteed.
