the Yankees seem unlikely for Gagne.  He says the Red Sox are offering David Murphy and Kason Gabbard, while the Cubs are still quietly involved.

The Braves are still trying to improve and have made offers for Kansas City closer Octavio Dotel and Cincinnati starter Bronson Arroyo. The Braves offered the Royals demoted starter Kyle Davies.

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox are the winner of the Eric Gagne sweepstakes pending Gagne's consent and a review of medical records.  Rosenthal says Gagne might share the closer role with Jonathan Papelbon; it would not be shocking to see Papelbon become the setup man for the rest of the year.  That would be a hell of a 1-2 punch regardless and a huge asset for the playoffs.

Rosenthal says Kason Gabbard is one of the two players going to Texas in the deal.  Jayson Stark thinks David Murphy is the other player, but it's far from confirmed.  The Red Sox still need to talk to Gagne and Scott Boras.

Despite reports that the Yankees are unlikely to make any moves prior to the 4 p.m. trading deadline, the Yankees are making a big push to land reliever Eric Gagne from the Rangers. The Red Sox, Mets and Cubs are the other serious bidders for Gagne. The Yankees, however, have told Rangers GM Jon Daniels that prospects Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy are not available in any deal. :gazza:

Jayson Stark recently mentioned on ESPN's Trade Deadline special edition of Baseball Tonight that the Padres acquired White Sox outfielder/utility guy Rob Mackowiak.

Padres Acquire Morgan Ensberg

According to Buster Olney (via RotoWorld), the Padres have traded for third baseman Morgan Ensberg.

Kevin Kouzmanoff might be well-served with a platoon partner, but it would make sense to get someone who hits righties.  Both Kouzmanoff and Ensberg excel against southpaws, Kouzmanoff more so this year.  Give Kouzmanoff a mulligan for his awful April (his first full month in the bigs), and he's hit .273/.328/.486.  Nothing amazing, but why would Ensberg be any better?
