History: ABL, America Basketball League 1961-1963
La scintilla che innescò il tutto accadde nell'estate del 1960 quando i Minneapolis Lakers si trasferirono a LA per la stagione 1960-61.
Abe Saperstein, proprietario degli Harlem Globetrottersa cui era stato promesso un Team a LA in NBA, rispose annunciando la nascita di una lega rivale, la American Basketball League nel Marzo del 1961.
La laga era formata da 8 squadre: i Chicago Majors di Abe, i Cleveland Pipers ( una squadra della Amateur Athletic Union industrial league) di George Steinbrenner, i mitici Hawaii Chiefs di Art Kim, i Kansas City Steers di Ken Krueger, i Los Angeles Jets di Len Corbosiero, Pittsburgh Renaissance di Lenny Lipman, i San Francisco Saints di George McKeon ed i Washington Tapers (un altro Team di una lega industriale) di Paul Cohen. Saperstein ovviamnete si elesse commissioner della lega, creando così un conflitto di interessi che danneggiò la reputazione della NBL.
Solo una manciata di giocatori NBA accettò l'offerta della NBL, fra questi Bill Sharman, che dopo esser stato rifiutato come HC di Pittsburgh in NBA divenne ilcoach dei Los Angeles Jets in ABL (Sharman è l'unico coach ad aver vinto il titolo sia in NBA, che in ABA che nella NBL: Cleveland in ABL nel 1962, i Los Angeles Stars della ABA nel 1971 e i Los Angeles Lakers della NBA nel 1972).
A Cleveland, John McLendon, aveva avuto molto successo sia come allenatore sia al college che in AAU, fece dei Pipers, il primo Team di una lega professionistica Americana di Basket ad avere un African-American coach. Gli altri Coach erano: Andy
Phillip (Chicago), Red Rocha (Hawaii), Jack McMahon (Kansas City), Neil Johnston (Pittsburgh), Stan Stutz (Washington) e l'allenatore di college Phil Woolpert (San Francisco).
Nessuna delle stelle accettò l'ogfferta della NBL, solo pochi nomi tra cui Dick Barnett di Syracuse's per Cleveland e Kenny Sears di New York perSan Francisco. Larry Seigfried fu l'unico giocatore scelto al Draft NBA di rilievo che scelse la NBA, a Cleveland. Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton, giocatore dei Globetrotters e leggenda dei New York Knick, giocò per Chicago, e George Yardley di Syracuse e Fort Wayne firmò per Los Angeles.

PPG, 8.6 RPG) , Sears (17.7 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 4.4 APG), Spivey da Hawaii (22.7PPG, 11.2 RPG), Nick Mantis of Kansas City (14.6 PPG) e Jackson (17.5 PPG) e Hershell Turner di Chicago (16.5 PPG) formarono l'All-ABL Second Team.
Il 9 Aprile Cleveland sconfisse Kansas City per 106-102 andando a vincere il primo anello ABL. Dopo aver vinto l'anello, Cleveland scoinvolse il mondo del Basketball andando a firmare la stella di Ohio State ed All-American
Jerry Lucas con un contratto di due anni per $50,000. Lucas membro del Team USA oro alle Olimpiadi del 1960 aveva condotto Ohio State al campionato NCAA nel 1960-61, giocatore dell'anno nel 1961, NCAA tournament MVP nel 1960 e 1961, All-American per 3 volte (1960, 1961 and 1962), leader nei rimbalzi due volte (1960-61 e 1961-62) e per tre volte leader nei field goal percentage (1959-60,

Ben presto dopo questa firma NBA e NBL avevano discusso di una possibile unione; ma mesi dopo la NBA aveva deciso che Cleveland sarebbe potuta diventare una nuova franchigia NBA al costo di $400,000 (inclusi $100,000 d'indennità a Cincinnati che mantenmevano i diritti NBA su Lucas). Subito la NBL bloccò e proibì ai Pipers di unirsi alla NBA.
La stagione 1962-63 cominciò con il ricollocamento di 3 franchigie: i New York
Tapers divennero i Philadelphia Tapers, i San Francisco Saints divennero gli Oakland Oaks e gli Hawaii Chiefs divennero i Long Beach Chiefs. Altri 3 Teams rimannero quelli della stagione passata, Chicago, Kansas City
e Pittsburgh,per un nuovo totale di 6 squadre.
La lage continuò ad esistere fino a quando il 31 dichiarò perdite per $1 million nel 1961-62 e di $250,000 nel 1962-63.
Kansas City, che aveva il miglior record di lega,22-9 fino a quel momento, fu dichiarata campione da Saperstein. Oakland, Long Beach, Kansas City e Pittsburgh avevano in mente di continuare con una lega ridotta a 4 squadre ma tutto fallì così come la NBL. Hawkins finì ai

NBA History:La Nascita.
- LA Basketball Association of America (BAA) ebbe inizio nel 1946 periodo in cui il college basketball vivava un periodo di splendore. La BAA andò a colmare la domanda proveniente dalle città della East Coast che non erano rappresentate nella NBL.
- La BAA rivaleggiava infatti con la già esistente National Basket League (NBL), operante quasi interamente nel Midwest.
- La BAA comprendeva undici squadre, la più forte e celebre delle quali erano i Philadelphia Warriorsdella stella “Jumpin’” Joe Fulks, ala di 1.97 noto a livello pro come il padre del jump shot, primo capocannoniere BAA con la media di 23ppg ed un incredibile vetta (per i tempi) di 41 putni!
- La lega viveva comunque dissesti economici già dalla sua seconda stagione, dove quattro delle squadre fondatrici, Detroit, Cleveland, Toronto e Pittsburgh fallirono...lo stipendio era basso..ed in generale la neonata lega sembrava già in procinto di chiudere i battenti.
- Nel 1948 la BAA per vincere la sanguinosa disputa con la NBL decise di reclutare i migliori talenti in circolazione. Funzionò. Gli emissari della nuova lega riuscirono a convincere quattro squadre a lasciare la National Basketball League. Fra queste c’erano anche i campioni in carica Minneapolis Lakers del grande George Mikan, il centro di 2.07 che aveva appena vinto il premio di MVP della Lega raccogliendo tutti i 240 voti disponibili. Come aveva fatto nella NBL, anche nella nuova lega Mikan condusse Minneapolis alla vittoria in campionato e vinse la classifica cannonieri a 28 punti di media.
- La perdita di 4 squadre ma overall di George Mikan la più lucente delle stelle del panorama cestistico fu la condanna a morte per la NBL. Nel 1949 la decisione delle rimanenti franchigie di accorporarsi con la BAA e dunque la nascita della National Basketball Association (NBA).
- Le diciassette squadre furono suddivise in tre division.
Come da pronostico nessuna squadra era in grado di battere Mikan e i suoi Lakers. In regular season Minneapolis vinse facile la propria division mentre George, a 27 punti di media, dominò la classifica marcatori. Nei playoff Mikan portò la sua produzione offensiva ad oltre 31 punti a partita e i Lakers, con dieci successi in dodici incontri, si aggiudicarono il campionato.
- I punti oscillavano fra i 60 e i 90, con la sola eccezione di un exploit di 100. E dietro allo stellare Mikan, c’era solo un altro giocatore, Alex Groza di Indianapolis, capace di varcare la soglia del ventello a partita.
Con il cronometro dei 24 secondi ancora di là da venire, le squadre in vantaggio nel quarto periodo entravano “in stallo”, il che portava a delle partite davvero inguardabili. NCAA Anecdotes:
Phil Woolpert
Phil Woolpert leggendario coach dei Dons di San Francisco con un record a Frisco di 153-78 incluse 60 vittorie consecutive, ed un doppio titolo NCAA del '55 e del '56 con Bill Russell e KC Jones in campo.
Dopo aver lasciato i Dons andò brevemente ad allenare i San Francisco Saints (squadra di giocatori cinesi americani) della American Basketball League, tornando ad allenare al college nel 1962,all'University of San Diego.
Phil Woolpert si ritirò nel 1969 e per un periodo fece anche il conduttore di scuola-bus!!
